Mitchell River Guided Fishing Packages

If you enjoy angling for large rainbow trout in a crystal clear mountain river, this is for you! Experience Mother Nature at her best: see spectacular glacier capped mountains, wildlife, old growth cedar trees, and so much more.  Fishing on the Mitchell River is catch and release only.

The fishing the first week or so of July using minnow imitations can be exciting as the salmon fry are leaving the river, heading into Quesnel Lake.
The resident river populations of trout feed on dry flies all summer long usually the smaller trout are the most aggressive feeders at this time. We usually catch a few big trout each day for a good mix. Towards the end of August, the Sockeye Salmon start returning to the Mitchell River and are incredibly beautiful to see as you jet boat to the fishing holes. The large Rainbow trout come out of Quesnel Lake following the migrating salmon to their spawning beds, waiting to feed on any salmon eggs that escape. Egg patterns work well and the takes from the trout are aggressive.

As time moves on in the spawning cycle and the salmon begin to die off bits of flesh begin to flow through the river system. The flesh pattern flies that we tie are very effective as they entice already well fed trout to eat again. You will catch large bull trout as well as big rainbow trout. You can see 4 different color variations on the rainbows in this river, which in it self is unique. The large spots and size of the fish remind many people of fishing in Alaska. Many guests rate this river in the top 3 that they have fished any where in the world. Come and enjoy this experience for your self. You will want to bring a good camera! The Mitchell River is open from July 1st to September 30th.

The fish in this river system are between 12 and 40 inches long, and range from 3 to 20 lbs. We usually jet boat up the river in the morning and wade and float the boat from run to run as we work our way back down the river? Lake fishing on Quesnel Lake, the deepest fjord lake in the world, for large trophy class Rainbow Trout is included as part of this package.

The Blackwater River

Blackwater River float trips are the top destination, for wilderness fly fishing in central British Columbia, and many believe in North America. The Blackwater River deserves its reputations one of BC's very special waters not only for the quality of the angling, but also for the richness of the outdoor experience.

New standards of comfort and success for these wilderness 4 or 6 day float fishing adventures. Your dreams will become a reality as you float and wade the upper section of the Blackwater River. Early season is the best angling as the water levels allow trout to roam freely from countless lakes and streams. The trout move into the river to feed on the Stonefly and caddis hatches. Wading opportunities are found on every stretch of the river, as the river drops very slowly through the pine tree bench land.

The landscape changes in lower Blackwater, as the river picks up speed descending into the canyon section. This section is as it has been for all time, with deep pools, back eddy's, fast runs and big rocks holding larger rainbows. The steep slopes that protect the lower Blackwater are lined with DouglasFir and pine trees.

The canyon section lasts for half of this float, widening out, giving long runs that may not have had a fisher since last season. We fish this section in August and September.

Lake Fishing

Brown Lake:
The fishing gets good again in September when the nights start cooling off and the days are still warm and enjoyable, as the fish begin to forage to pack on extra weight for the winter.  With the Blackwater strain being present in these large trout, be prepared for a great fight, with lots of big runs and jumps. The trout in lake average 3 to 5 lbs and 8 to 12 lb fish are caught often.
I like to anchor up and cast and retrieve into the weeds or work the edge of shoals Chironomid fishing is an effective way to fish this lake and our resident guides know all the locations where the fish school up. We teach lake fishing techniques and help every one from beginners to advanced fly fishers. Fly tying is available at the lodge and using a fly you have tied to catch you trophy trout, makes the experience that much more rewarding.

Little Brown Lake:
We like to fish this lake the next day for more exciting action. The lake is smaller in size and the fish are 1 to 3 lbs. We have a few special spots that have brought a lot of enjoyment to our guests. Dry fly fishing happens often on this lake and if you work quickly can have a blast casting to rising trout.

Fir Lake:
Large Rainbow Trout lurk in its depths, the fish range in size from 2-10 lbs. they are exceptionally beautiful Rainbow Trout. Spending time has allowed us to unlock the lake's secrets. This lake is best fished in the end of May, early June and September. Heavy tippet 8 to 10 lb range would handy to have with you. We drive out from the lodge each day to fish this lake.

Quesnel Lake:
This is a big lake holding big fish. Quesnel Lake is the deepest fjord lake in North America has three arms each about 30 miles long. Knowing where and when to fish the different sections allows us, to have you hooking that fish of a lifetime. We fish the drop offs, transition zones, and special areas where the fish are feeding. The Quesnel lake strain of rainbow trout is late maturing and does not spawn until they 7 years or more. The fish grow to a large size because of the nutrient base flowing into the lake, from the salmon spawning rivers and creeks. There are large schools of bait fish in the lake system allowing the fish to grow. For the Last 5 years you cannot keep a fish over 19 inches and this has led to bigger rainbow and bull trout being caught. Pictures tell the story better than we can.

Mitchell Lake Fly-Outs:
Fly in to Mitchell Lake. Deep in the Cariboo Mountains Park surrounded by towering ice capped mountains. Mitchell Lake is known for its excellent Rainbow and Bull Trout fishing. The Trout are 2 to 5 lbs with large bull trout up to 15 lbs being caught. Access is by air only so the pressure on this system is limited, giving you quality fishing.

We use a four passenger float plane or beaver float plane to move our gear in to the lake. We provide a 14' aluminum boat, motor prepared meals and guide.   You will stay in the comfort of our fish camp on the shores of pristine Mitchell Lake, deep in the heart of the Cariboo Mountains Park. Dry fly fishing at creek mouths, as they enter the lake produce nice rainbows, with big bull trout cruising the shore, Early mornings a slow troll with big leeches take trout as they begin to feed. If you have binoculars bring them as there are mountain goats on the sides of the mountains that you can see. Wildlife sightings are common and vary from mountain Cariboo to moose to grizzly bears. A camera with a good telephoto lens helps you get those once in a lifetime shots.

Most stays are for three nights but some guests stay for a week at a time. Longer stays can be arranged.

Price: $500 Canadian per person per day
